Raising the "Energy Curtain”. Liberalization of the Russian energy market: new opportunities or new challenge for the Nordic market?, in Saint Petersburg, Russia, 21-23 October 2008

The ultimate goal of the conference is initiation of a straight, sincere and open dialogue between Russia and Europe, which we believe could be achieved through discussion of ongoing developments and results of reforms in the energy industry of Russia, the Baltic States and Nordic countries, as well as through debate on the prospects of power market development and cooperation of Northern and Eastern Europe. This kind of dialogue appears a necessary condition for both the strengthening of mutually beneficial relations and for creation of the regional system of energy security.

Key content:

  • Results of reforms and prospects of the energy industry development in Northern Europe, Russia and the Baltic States
  • New model and structure of the energy market and the attractiveness of the industry to investors
  • Impact of the liberalization on integration processes in Northern and Eastern Europe, as well as on development of the industry in the region in general
  • New features and new opportunities of energy trading
  • Role of governmental authorities in the process, legal issues

International Youth Nuclear Congress (IYNC) 2008 in Interlaken, Switzerland, on 20-26 September 2008

The International Youth Nuclear Congress IYNC-2008 will be held in Interlaken, Switzerland, September 20.-26., 2008. The congress will take place in the stylish Kursaal Conference Center of Interlaken, built in the middle of the 19th century. Interlaken is situated in the centre of Switzerland, between the Lakes of Thun and Brienz and at the foot the famous peaks of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Excellent train connections exist betweenВ Interlaken and the Airports of Zurich (177 km), Geneva (230 km), Basle (138 km) and Berne (57 km).

IYNC is a network of a new generation of professionals to:
• develop new approaches to communicate benefits of nuclear power, as part of a balanced energy mix;
• promote peaceful use of nuclear science and technology for the welfare of mankind;
• transfer knowledge from the current nuclear generation to the next .
IYNC has held four successful conferences around the globe - with delegates convening in Slovakia (2000), South Korea (2002), Canada (2004) and Sweden/Finland (2006). The recent Congress in Stockholm attracted over 350 professionals from 48 countries.

The 2nd ENEN PhD Event 2008 will be held in the framework of IYNC 2008 on 23 September 2008.

Nuclear Engineering Science and Technology (NESTet) 2008 in Bodapest, Hangary, on 4-9 May 2008

This important European Nuclear Society (ENS) conference is dedicated to networking in nuclear education and training across the fields of engineering, science and technology.

An OECD study in 2000, ‘Nuclear Education and Training: Cause for Concern?' recommended the following:

- Governments have a strategic role to play in energy planning. Governments should contribute to, if not take responsibility for, integrated planning to ensure that necessary human resources are available. There should also be adequate resources for vibrant nuclear research and development programmes including modernisation of facilities;

- The provision of basic and attractive educational programmes at university level is among the challenges of revitalising nuclear education;

- Rigorous training programmes are needed to meet specific needs and exciting research projects should also be developed to attract quality students and employees to research institutes;

- Industry, research institutes and universities need to work together to better co-ordinate efforts to encourage the younger generation and develop and promote a programme of collaboration in nuclear education and training. There should also be mechanisms for sharing best practices in promoting nuclear courses.

The world is responding. From the Americas to Europe and Asia networks have been established to maintain nuclear knowledge and to ensure there is a suitably qualified nuclear workforce for the future.

NESTet 2008 is designed to facilitate an exchange of information, collaboration and the sharing of best practices in nuclear education and training in engineering science and technology.
