PSI for a Chemist/Metallurgist/Chemical Engineer (Liquid Metal Chemistry)

The Paul Scherrer Institut is a centre for multi-disciplinary research and one of the world's leading user laboratories. With its 1300 employees it belongs as an autonomous institution to the Swiss ETH domain and concentrates its activities on solid-state research and material sciences, elementary particle physics, energy and environmental research as well as on biology and medicine.

In the RadWaste Analytics group of the Laboratory for Radio- and Environmental Chemistry we study the radioactive inventory of accelerator and target facilities. One branch of our research is concerned with the chemical behavior of radionuclides that are produced by proton bombardment in liquid metal targets. The goal of this research is a better understanding of fundamental chemical properties and processes that influence the release, transport and deposition of radioactive species in liquid metal systems. The results are important for the safe operation of future high power liquid metal targets to be used for neutron production in accelerator driven systems for the transmutation of nuclear waste or in large scale research facilities.
